EIN Number: What It Is and How to Apply for Free

An EIN is a 9-digit federal tax ID the IRS gives businesses. Applying is free directly at IRS.gov. Never pay a site that only "files your EIN".
Who needs an EIN?
- Multi-member LLCs and corporations
- Any business with employees
- Single-member LLCs that want a business bank account (most banks require one)
- LLCs electing S-corp tax status
How to apply for an EIN
- Online (US SSN/ITIN holders): IRS online application, EIN issued immediately.
- Fax: send Form SS-4 to the IRS.
- Mail: send Form SS-4; slowest option.
- Phone (international applicants only): the IRS international line.
EIN for non-US residents
Without an SSN or ITIN you cannot use the online form. You file Form SS-4 by fax or mail, or apply by phone. We're documenting this process first-hand; see our about page.
